Delivering clear research leadership in digital sciences

The Digital Sciences Initiative comprises a federation of cooperating and collaborating researchers across the span of digital sciences and technologies focusing on large-scale mission-oriented research. The Initiative has a clear research focus on leadership in digital sciences – the fundamental theories and practice of computation and algorithms, machine learning and robotics, architecture and communications.

The Digital Sciences Initiative is distinguished by both research excellence and scale. It has the critical mass, research expertise and multi-disciplinary focus required to attract large-scale competitive and industry funding, including federally funded Centres of Excellence and Cooperative Research Centres. It is a thought leader in the digital sciences, highly connected to internationally leading institutes in digital sciences and is the go-to place for industry and government across all digital technology.

Enabling research themes

The Digital Sciences Initiative undertakes research in both fundamental digital sciences and applied digital technologies.

Digital sciences cover core themes, such as data-centric engineering, that generates research applicable to a range of different technologies and applications.

Digital technologies cover broad applications and impact areas of digital sciences such as digital agriculture. Many of these application areas are already the focus of economic and societal “grand challenges” being addressed nationally and globally which involve research institutions and industry well beyond the core digital domain.
